Heart's Dreamboat Annie and Jellyfish's Spilt Milk Get Vinylphyle Reissues

Heart's legendary debut album, Dreamboat Annie, and Jellyfish's cult classic swan song, Spilt Milk, are the latest records to join UMe's Vinylphyle audiophile vinyl reissue series. Available to order today exclusively via uDiscover Music, both albums were mastered by Joe Nino-Hernes and pressed at RTI on 180-gram black vinyl, with an initial pressing of 3,000. Similar in presentation and execution to Blue Note's acclaimed Tone Poet series, the production and packaging seek to honor the stature of these recordings and includes tip-on wrapped gatefold jackets in satin matte finish, printed on clay-coated board, with archival poly sleeves and a four-panel insert featuring new liner notes.

Dreamboat Annie, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, was mastered from the 1975 Can-Base Studios tapes and features liner notes from veteran music writer Rick Florino, while Spilt Milk was mastered from a new 96kHz, 24bit digital remaster sourced from the 1993 Ocean Way Mixdown tapes and was pressed on 2LP, spreading the 46 minutes of music onto three sides to maximize punch and fidelity, while minimizing the amount of record-flipping interruptions. A handwritten message to fans from Jellyfish co-founder Roger Joseph Manning Jr. is engraved on the fourth side. Manning also provides an illuminating, in-depth interview in the liner notes about the making of the short-lived band's power pop masterpiece.

Since launching in November 2025, Vinylphyle, billed as "a premium vinyl experience for people who love vinyl," has provided best-in-class pressings to the vinyl market of an eclectic array of albums as The Velvet Underground and Nico's enigmatic self-titled debut, Peter Frampton's legendary live album, Frampton Comes Alive!, Bob Marley's immortal Exodus, Nat King Cole's exquisite The Christmas Song, Erykah Badu's boundary-pushing Mama's Gun, and The Band's roots-rock classic, Northern Lights-Southern Cross. The series aims to release two titles per month, spanning genres and eras to build a library of must-own records. Backed by RTI's craftsmanship, these records are produced at the highest levels and include extensive quality controls at every step of the process, from mastering to plating to pressing and printing, ensuring a superb final product.

From the moment Dreamboat Annie arrived, it was clear Heart had delivered a masterful first statement - a fully formed debut that introduced a band with vision, power, and an unmistakable voice. Originally released in Canada on September 7, 1975 on Mushroom Records, followed in the United States on February 14, 1976, the album was produced by Mike Flicker and recorded at Can-Base Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia. Working with engineer Mike Fraser, the band crafted a sound that was both expansive and intimate, pairing layered acoustic arrangements with hard-driving electric performances. The result was a record that felt deliberate and confident, from the atmospheric title track to the explosive energy of "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You," both of which became FM radio staples.

At a time when rock radio and arena stages were overwhelmingly dominated by men, sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson emerged as pioneers. Ann's powerhouse vocals stood shoulder to shoulder with the era's biggest male rock singers, and Nancy's guitar work and the sisters' infectious songwriting helped expand what listeners expected from women in rock. Dreamboat Annie climbed to No. 7 on the Billboard 200, propelled by strength of its three radio hits, which also included the softer in sound title track. Its enduring appeal has led to more than two million copies sold in the United States alone (certified multi-platinum), with over three million sold worldwide. The album's commercial breakthrough established Heart as a major force in 1970s rock and laid the foundation for a career that would span decades.

Fifty years on, Dreamboat Annie is widely regarded as one of the most significant debuts in rock history, a landmark album that not only launched Heart into the upper echelon of arena rock, but also helped open doors for generations of women artists in a male-dominated genre. Its seamless fusion of folk textures, hard rock drive, and lyrical romanticism continues to resonate, affirming its status as both a pioneering achievement and a timeless classic. "'Crazy on You' has only grown in stature and keeps finding new listeners through high-profile placements in Marvel films like "Captain Marvel" and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Today the album's influence endures: as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, it is being honored this year with induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame, underscoring its lasting artistic and cultural impact.

Much like how Heart's Dreamboat Annie redefined expectations for a rock debut by two women in a male-dominated era, Jellyfish's Spilt Milk followed nearly two decades later as another example of a band pushing pop and rock boundaries with ambitious songwriting and richly detailed production, an album that, despite modest commercial returns at the time, has since become a revered cult classic.

A towering testament to Jellyfish's ambitious musical vision, the band's sophomore album, Spilt Milk, expanded and intensified the lush, power pop sound hinted at on their 1990 debut Bellybutton. Written and co-produced by founding members Andy Sturmer and Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and recorded between April and September 1992 at various studios in Los Angeles, the album brought in co-producers Albhy Galuten and Jack Joseph Puig alongside the band and enlisted session guitarists Jon Brion and Lyle Workman after the departures of original bassist Chris Manning and guitarist Jason Falkner to help create its intricate arrangements. Released on February 9, 1993 by Charisma Records, Spilt Milk wove dense harmonies, sweeping orchestrations, and whimsical lyrics into a meticulously crafted pop-rock tapestry that, despite its complexity and sophistication, delivered memorable hooks and dramatic flair.

Although Spilt Milk underperformed commercially at the time, peaking at No. 164 on the Billboard 200 amid a musical climate dominated by grunge and alternative rock, its ambitious artistry has only grown in esteem over the decades. The album's original release was followed by a yearlong tour, but its lackluster sales contributed to the band's breakup the following year. However, Spilt Milk has since achieved cult classic status among fans and critics alike, celebrated for its impeccable craftsmanship, melodic inventiveness, and fearless blend of pop influences from the likes of The Beach Boys, Big Star, The Beatles, ELO, XTC and Supertramp.

In the three decades since its release, critics have reassessed the album and increasingly embraced Spilt Milk as a richly crafted pop masterpiece, while it also continues to find its way to those searching for adventurous, ornate power pop. Uncut praised the group's "sumptuous arrangements" and declared the album a "compelling hybrid of Bacharach, Queen and The Beach Boys," while Newsweek hailed it as "a lost power-pop masterwork" filled with "unfashionably sunny and remarkably well-built pop gems." However, Popmatters perhaps said it best: "Spilt Milk is one of the great accomplishments of pop history: a colossus that bestrides pop music and crushed Jellyfish, the band that made it."

Spanning nearly two decades of adventurous, melody-rich rock, these two releases underscore Vinylphyle's mission - to celebrate sonically ambitious records that have left a lasting imprint on popular music. From the arena-launching power of Heart's 1976 classic to the baroque-pop brilliance of Jellyfish's 1993 magnum opus, both albums return to vinyl in premium, collectible editions that honor their enduring artistry and influence.
