Kurt Deimer recently released his new single "Scared To Death", which comes from his new horror comedy film of the same name (hitting theaters March 13th) and his forthcoming album "A Grog Is Born" (out May 8th). To celebrate we asked Kurt to tell us about the song and video. Here is the story:
Our latest single "Scared To Death" is the song that director Paul Boyd and producer Eric Barrett asked me to write to be kind of the featured song of the soundtrack for the movie, Scared To Death; a song that shares the essence of the chaos that went on inside that house, as you will see in the movie. He asked, "can you write something cool?" and I said, "I'm going to write something called 'Scared To Death'."
I was up in Albany, NY with Brian Wheat from Tesla, Sammy Boller (from Detroit), and Brendon Hingle (from Southern Illinois). I said I need to come up with a good idea on how to communicate what is going on in this house and make it into a kickass song that's heavy, hard, theatrical. Sammy came up with that little guitar lick, Brian helped lay it out, and I just started writing lyrics to the music because I knew what the movie was all about, and that is how "Scared To Death" was started. Once we got that demo done, I took it to Chris Lord-Alge in L.A. I had a good basis. I shared it with Paul and they thought it was kickass. Then Chris and I took it to Mix LA, our studio, and I added all the different voices and the screams. Everything you hear going on in the background is me in a room that's just mic'd all over the place. Like a big empty hall, if you will, or a gymnasium, but it was in a studio. The way we mic'd it was cool - it would pick up everything. I could literally walk around the room and just scream and make little troll voices and do all this crazy stuff. That's how we recorded it and then Chris took what we had done in New York, added all those touches to it, and that is the song you hear now and what you will hear when you go see the movie Scared To Death in theaters, starring Bill Moseley and Lin Shaye and myself, Kurt Deimer, as The Grog.
The music video idea came from my management at Regime. Paul Boyd, the director of Scared To Death, and I had talked about doing a music video and we wanted to do it at the house we actually filmed the movie. So, me and the guys, we flew out, I think it was in December, and we went to the same house that survived the Altadena fires. Everything around it burned down. But this house, which must be full of ghosts, survived. It's all wood - it's crazy! So, we went into the room where Bill and I and everyone has a seance. We brought in the makeup artist who had trained everybody in The Walking Dead how to do zombies, so they made us zombies and we shot throughout the house so that we could portray the true essence of "Scared To Death," why it was written and its part in the film. We thought it would be very apropos to do it as zombies. That's how that all came about. It was really fun. It was a really long day but I really enjoyed making it and working with such creative people that had worked on stuff like Walking Dead and Paul Boyd, master director. We thought it really tied everything together as the movie gets ready to hit theaters on Friday, March 13th. Hope you guys go see it!
