Wax Mekanix just released a new single and video entitled "Naked" and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the track. Here is the story:
"Naked" came out of the same writing period that produced "Look At You Now" from my Electric Talon Records album Psychotomimetic (2023). That song was about acceptance, seeing yourself in the mirror and finding calm. "Naked" is the step before that calm...the raw confrontation with yourself when the armor comes off.
The lyrics set the tone: "I feel naked / Vanishing fast / Spooked and shaken / A banished outcast." It's the sensation of being exposed, fragile, and on edge. Musically, I wanted a new sonic landscape that pushed my sound further. To do that, I brought in new players who could bring fresh textures. Me and Wendell PoPs Sewell on acoustic guitars and Rob Devious on pedal steel electric guitar gave the song depth and tension, while me and Maxim 'Lectriq' Laskavy added percussion touches...the clave and subtle water-drop rhythms...that punctuate the space and build a sense of desolation.
This track also marks the first appearance of acoustic bass and pedal steel guitar on any of my records. Lectriq's acoustic bass gives the vulnerability weight, and Devious' pedal steel stretches the emotional space between the words, haunting the listener with open, reflective tones. Every element...instrument, pause, and repetition...is meant to serve the story: "All in my / All in my / All in my / All in my head."
Lines like "A heart breaking / Shatter like glass / Convicted, forsaken / Locked in this mask" put you in the room with someone confronting their truth. And "Though I'm cleaved / You haven't seen the last of me / One word is a dirge / One look provokes a catastrophe" underscores the tension between fragility and defiance.
The refrain "I feel naked / I feel naked" drives it home...unflinching, exposed, alive. It's the moment before understanding, the breath before calm, the reflection after the mirror cracks but the truth remains.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
