Americana star Sammi Accola just released her new album "A Candle on a Busy Street" and to celebrate we asked her to tell us about the song "Holy Woman". Here is the story:
This song started with a note one of my best friends, and roommates at the time, gave me that read, "a mini bouquet for a holy woman." This might not sound like much, but I ran down our Victorian staircase and shouted, "Summerlyn-HOLY WOMAN! Women need to hear this!!!"
I had been wanting to work with more female musicians, and after writing this song, I thought, "Well, I guess now I have to form an all-female band," and boy, am I glad I did. The band and I made Belmont University history as the first all-female band to win a showcase and move on to their big, end-of-the-year arena show.
"Holy Woman" embraces the word "holy," which often feels like a far-off, unattainable identity, but simply means "to be set apart." To stand out. To be bold. This song celebrates womanhood. "Holy Woman" is a stompin' anthem that I hope women sing in their cars, showers, churches, over their friends, and just rest in. The lyrics invite us all to a longer and more crowded table than our personal experiences.
For the recording, I brought in some of my closest friends and most trustworthy singers-Summerlyn Powers, Andriana Seay, and Michelle Raybourn-to form a "mini choir," elevating the power of the words, "You can call me anything, but I'm a holy woman," through stacked harmony and glorious, melodic freedom.
I want to celebrate our actual human scars, beauty marks, and diverse experiences as women of faith.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
