Upper Lip just released their sophomore album "Devil's Ride" and to celebrate we asked Joseph Azzopardi to tell us about the song" Blood of Rock n' Roll". Here is the story:
"Blood of Rock n' Roll" was the first track I wrote for our second album Devil's Ride. The whole thing started back in May 2023 in my room when I came up with that punchy main riff on an acoustic guitar. As soon as I had it, the ideas started flowing. I began singing over it, shaping the vocal melody and lyrics right there on the spot, and quickly recorded the idea on my phone so I wouldn't lose the moment.
The concept behind the song is how rock music feels like a kind of lifeblood. For many of us and definitely for me, it's something that keeps us going. It gives us energy, hope, and the drive to move forward no matter what. The song is also a bit tongue-in-cheek, and I tried to reflect that in the lyrics as well. We come from a very small island in the Mediterranean, and it isn't always easy to play the kind of music we love. Unfortunately, rock music is often relegated to the sidelines and not always appreciated the way it deserves to be, and I wanted to touch on that feeling too.
When we started working on the production, our producer David Vella suggested adding chants in the chorus. That idea really elevated the track and helped give it that big, anthemic feel we were aiming for.
Personally, one of my favorite parts of the song is the ending section the guitar solo followed by the harmonized guitars. It's a moment where everything opens up musically, and it really captures the spirit and energy of the track.
Looking back, I'm really happy with how it turned out. "Blood of Rock n' Roll" feels like an anthem, and it perfectly sets the tone for Devil's Ride.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
