ULTRA SUNN recently released their new single "Flirt With Death" and to celebrate we asked frontman Sam Huge to tell us about the highly reflective and emotional track. Here is the story:
"Flirt With Death" is a deeply personal song, born from revisiting a feeling I carried as a child, more precisely, as a teenager. It reflects a period of my life marked by eating disorders and an immense struggle just to exist.
It was a long and difficult battle.. hospitalizations, guilt, the constant feeling of fading away. But beyond that, the song also speaks about how I was perceived by others: as if I were lesser, a burden, something weak and fragile, suspended somewhere between life and death.
In the chorus, I address those who see me that way, asking them to truly look at me as I am, to face the reality of who I've become. To confront the visible marks of something that, for so long, remained invisible. As it's something people often choose not to see.
After everything, I came to understand that suffering is not a sign of weakness, but of immense strength, because in the end, I was still alive.
Musically, we wanted to return to our roots while introducing a trance-inspired synth in the verse. The track evolved a lot in the studio, almost like being stuck in a dead end, until we finally broke free, opening up the chorus like a deep, proud breath.
