Singled Out: Sam Zalta's Forever's Not Enough

Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Zalta just released his new duet with Mimi Pretend called "Forever's Not Enough", and to celebrate we asked Sam to tell us about the track. Here is the story:

When writing songs for an album, I'm always thinking of where they'll go in the sequence. For this track, the melody came to me in one of those "not quite awake, but not yet sleeping" states, so I did what I always do in those moments: I picked up my phone and hummed the tune into my voice notes app. When working on the track the next morning, I realized this was going to be the album closer.

Writing with the sequence in mind is about more than lyrics and melody. It's about instrumentation, dynamics, structure. Putting a period (or an ellipsis) at the end of the journey the listener has taken, but also giving them a reason to want to listen again.

I knew with this album that I wanted to document my experiences as both an emotional partner and performer through a very specific point in my life. My partner, Adeline (not her real name), and I embarked on a very intense creative journey, often pushing ourselves to our physical limit on stage. This song tells the story at the very end of that phase in our lives.

Unfortunately Adeline isn't around anymore, so I enlisted Mimi Pretend to sing her parts throughout the record. The very end features vocals by Ana Becker, and a special guest appearance by my dog Frank.
