princefarming (Michael Wynnof of Vicky von Vicky, Melted Wings fame) just released his new EP "Bleeding Star" and to celebrate we asked Michael to tell us about the single "You Win The Trophy". Here is the story:
Although my recollection of writing this song is somewhat vague, I know it was heavily influenced at the time (around 2009) by Interpol & Metric (Sick Muse). And I think I was recording and writing at the same time here. I remember being very happy with the drum sounds on the new GarageBand at the time and realized I could make a pretty good demo with it.
For the intro, I wanted to try to do something like "It's a long way to the top.." (by AC/DC) when those heavy E chords come in, although listening now, they sound like Blondie's One way or Another! (Listen around the 0:14 mark). For the verses I had come up with those repetivive background suspension chords, and tried to have them anchor the song with the given chord structure I had laid out already, basically E - A - C# minor chords. The single note licks in the verse, were pretty much the last thing I came up with, inspired by Interpol/Metric. Listen to both of them meshed together at the 0:28 mark of the song.
Lyrically I had a vision of singing about LA and someone who goes there to "make it" but ultimately fails, which I think is the case for most. I don't really have a personal experience with this, so this is largely fiction, but in some ways it's very similar to trying to make it in music. In the end the industry will just devour you. For me though all these years later, it's still a fun song.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
