Singled Out: John Coffey's It's You

Dutch rockers John Coffey just released their new studio album "Not Alone" and to celebrate we asked them to tell us about the song "It's You" Here is the story:

This one is special to us... for people who don't know us, we usually put 20 riffs into a song and try to make some sense of them. The Metallica way or, in our case, the Every Time I Die-way. Sometimes though, it's not the riff but a beautiful chord progression that sparks the idea for a song. This was the case with "It's You". Richard (bass player) came up with the chords and the phonetical 'padadapapa'. I immediately loved it and put the vocal lines on the synths. All the synths you hear on the song are the exact ones that I used in a Garageband file... played on the keys of my laptop.

During the recording we realized it was a midtempo anthem-style song. So it needed a thousand layers of guitars...It ended up being six layers. The lead parts on the chorus are Turnstile-inspired and the harmonic bridge is a 100% homage to 'And Justice For All'. I would have loved to apply the same production to that part of the song as Metallica's record, but I lost that discussion.

All in all, it is a heartfelt song with a lot of beauty in the melody. It's about the power of human connection. It's why the loud-music scene has always meant so much to us. You step into a room full of strangers. Then someone falls, and the people around them pick them up. Someone jumps from a stage, trusting dozens of hands to catch them. Bodies crash into each other, people scream the same words, and for a moment, a room full of strangers carries each other. That feeling is real.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
