Sarah Sharp Reinterprets Randy Newman's 'I Think It's Going To Rain Today'

(MPG) Austin-based singer/songwriter Sarah Sharp shared her intimate rendition of Randy Newman's "I Think It's Going To Rain Today." The track is the latest single off her debut album Deja Vu, out May 15, which finds the highly respected local singer blending intimate nocturnal arrangements with her incredible vocal prowess.

After meeting Randy Newman at a house concert in New Orleans and sharing a conversation about artistic dreams, the cover reveals a masterful singer who is now ready to enjoy her own mainstream exposure.

"I feel this song as a call towards compassion and away from what is shallow, empty, and callous right now about the world and how we treat each other," Sharp said. "It is not from a place of sarcasm, but rather acknowledging brokenness and hoping that it will rain kindness to the point of overflowing."

Sharp previously shared Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," an interpretation she started performing after a former boyfriend developed cancer. Recorded after his passing, her heart-wrenching reading reflects on the disappointments of past relationships, embodying life experience and loss.

After nine years of her prestigious residency at the Elephant Room, Sarah Sharp recorded her debut album in the studio of local guitar legend Eric Johnson, who offered the space to her after being mesmerized by one of her performances. The result crosses over a multitude of genres, from jazz, to folk, to americana, providing a wide cinematic canvas on which she traverses a haunting emotional journey. Deja Vu marks the singer coming into her own in the national spotlight, with a distinguished, smokey vocal in the lineage of Norah Jones.

When asked about how she chose the material for Deja Vu, Sharp said "I've been playing with these musicians for years, and our closeness goes beyond just being like a family. I would give a kidney to anyone in my band. Months before we made this album, I had the opportunity to record six different dates at the Elephant Room, and I studied every minute of those gigs. That's how we selected the songs."

Sharp is a 3-time Austin Music Awards Winner for "Best Jazz" and, in addition to her success with the Jitterbug Vipers, she's also a widely-acclaimed commercial songwriter for such brands as Kia, Chanel, Macy's and more. Her compositions have garnered millions of streams and have been featured on NPR's Song Travels alongside the band. Sharp's first offering reflects her own unique, masterful voice and her ability to convey vulnerability through sound as a solo artist; all while playing with a band who've played and shaped this music over years of performance.
