(VITAL NERV) M.I.A. releases M.I.7, her seventh studio album, out today via OHMNIMUSIC, her own independent label. Seven songs, written in seven places, over seven days in each location, featuring American Gospel group Sunday Service. Listen to M.I.7 here.
The announcement of the album was accompanied by the release of lead single "EVERYTHING," and last weekend M.I.A. made a surprise appearance at Coachella alongside Diplo and Major Lazer, her first major live moment seen around the world ahead of the album's arrival.
Recorded, written, and conceptualized across Ethiopia, Egypt, India, United Kingdom, Greece, Australia, and the United States at Rick Rubin's Shangri La Studio, M.I.7 is M.I.A.'s gospel album, not in genre, but in spirit. The album is structured around the seven Trumpets of Revelation with each one narrating a biblical judgment before giving way to the next song. This is the conceptual architecture of the record itself, tracing the Book of Revelation from the first angel to the seventh, from fire falling to earth to the Ark of the Covenant appearing in heaven.
M.I.7 serves as a declaration of grace in the middle of fire. "JESUS" is a chant for liberation and one of the album's most urgent moments co-produced by long-time collaborator SWICK. She punctuates on the song "WHEN YOU THINK M.I.A IS DONE SATAN PUTS A FULLSTOP GOD PUTS A COMMA AND SAYS TO BE CONTINUED." "SACRED HEART" features her mother Kala singing a Tamil Christian hymn built around the phrase Ellaam Yesuvae ("Jesus is everything"), weaving her Sri Lankan heritage into the album's spiritual framework and bridging faith, culture, and identity. "MONEY" finds M.I.A. as subversive as she's ever been, interrogating wealth and spiritual economy while never chasing the money. "CIRCLE," a pivotal point in the writing process, clocks time down to the second, and doubles down on her fearlessness and staying power. "EVERYTHING," the album's closing statement and lead single, is meditative and rooted in unwavering faith and love. The album ends with "30 MINUTES OF SILENCE," the seventh seal - a biblical reference from the Book of Revelation. M.I.A. adds about the numerology surrounding the album:
7 HEAVEN , 7 SEALS , 7 TRUMPETS , 7 DAYS OF CREATION , 7 CONTINENTS , 7 DEADLY SINS , 7 VIRTUES , 7 COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW , 7 SEAS , 7 NOTES , 7 YEARS CYCLE , 7 ANCIENT CIVILISATIONS , 7 SACRAMENTS , 7 PILLARS OF THE HOUSE OF PROVERBS , 7 METALS OF ANTIQUITY , 7 PLANETS ALIGNED 2026 , 7 CHAKRAS , 7 STRINGS ON A VEENA , 7 SORROWS OF MARY , 7 SWORDS , 7 SONGS MADE EVERY 7 DAYS SPENT IN 7 PLACES , ON THIS 7 THE ALBUM , WHERE WE DELIVER 7INCHES OF THE 7 LP. THIS IS M.I.7
The album concept emerged as a vision that revealed itself before the recording process began, which demanded to be followed. A gospel record rooted in prayer, the Book of Revelation, and the Ark of the Covenant, tracing the Bible's truth all the way through to the present day. It is her most personal and spiritually guided work to date.
