(PMPR) Jenny Gillespie Mason today shares "Medicine of Light," the second single from her forthcoming album In the Safety of the Light, due 12th of June, 2026 on Native Cat Recordings. Produced by Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Bert Jansch, Vashti Bunyan), the track arrives ahead of what promises to be one of the most quietly extraordinary folk records of the year.

"Medicine of Light" began its life as a shorter piano piece, closer in feeling to an interlude, before Mason and Georgeson reworked it into the full arrangement heard on the album. Transferring it to acoustic guitar opened the song up, allowing the ensemble to breathe around it in a way the original sketch had not permitted. The result carries the weight and stillness of a hymn.

Of the song, Mason explains: "Medicine of Light was first written on the piano and was much shorter, almost like an interlude. When Noah Georgeson and I discussed how tracking would go and the players we would bring in for the session, I realized by transferring it to acoustic guitar I could make the song fuller and longer because I felt it would not only be more fun to arrange, but that the message of the song deserved more space; it's almost like a hymn, I think."

"Medicine of Light" follows lead single "Rungs of Love," which traced the taxonomy of love described by Mason's guru Mother Mirra Alfassa, moving from selfish human attachment through to devotion that seeks nothing in return and finally to a love that serves only the divine. Together, the two singles give a clear sense of the terrain In the Safety of the Light covers: music that is spare and intimate in form but expansive in its spiritual ambitions.

In the Safety of the Light was recorded in spring and autumn 2025 at a private studio in Los Angeles, with most of the songs captured live as an ensemble. The album draws on the pastoral glow of 1970s British folk, with echoes of Catherine Howe and Fairport Convention, while opening at times into the more atmospheric and ambient spaces of Hiroshi Yoshimura and the cosmic folk of Beck. Mason, who spent more than a decade exploring psychedelic pop, jazz, and electronic textures through her project Sis, wrote the album's songs strictly on acoustic guitar, returning to the instrument she first began writing on as a teenager.

In The Safety of Light is out 12th of June via Native Cat Recordings.
